The best news you’ll hear all day- red wine’s health benefits?
Resveratrol is a compound that is found largely in the skins of red grapes. Red wine is the most notable dietary source. Recently, there has been a growing body of scientific evidence linking resveratrol to a range of beneficial health effects, including brain and mental health as well as cardiovascular health. Some of the newest research is associating resveratrol with decreased risk of developing colorectal cancer (Anderson et al 2006, Isidoro et al 2007). No recommended daily allowance of resveratrol has been officially set by any regulatory body as of yet. Hence, seeking the advice of your physician when wishing to ingest this nutrient or any other nutrient is highly advised. Drinking red wine in moderation continues to be prudent and wise advice.
If you’re familiar with the CCAC’s nutritional guidelines, you may be a little confused. The CCAC suggests limiting alcohol consumption, because carcinogens are produced when the body metabolizes alcohol, and these carcinogens can accumulate in the bowel. However, data also supports the observation that wine consumption, especially red wine, is associated with a reduced incidence of colorectal cancer (Anderson et al 2005).
Like so many things in life, moderation is absolutely key. Overall, studies continue to reinforce the idea that to minimize your risk of developing colorectal cancer, it’s best to drink in moderation (a drink is defined as 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, and 1.5 oz. of spirits).
So that means that you can enjoy an occasional glass of wine with a healthful, colon-friendly supper!
If you’re interested in the world of wine, consider training for the Twenty Valley Niagara Wine Country Run in June! Beamsville, Ontario will be springing to life on June 12th and 13th, when runners of all levels will be invited to test their endurance and taste-test some of the region’s finest wines. The Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada is one of the charities benefiting from this Landmark Sport Group event- as if you’d need another reason to sign up.
Cheers!
