The Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon is fast approaching! Run, walk or volunteer with us on May 20th, 21st and 22nd, 2011
The CCAC is proud to introduce Becky Pink. You may recognize her from the Get Up There (GUT) For Colorectal Cancer event on March 4th, where she spoke as a patient representative of our organization. Now Becky is tacking a new challenge as she prepares to run in the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon in Halifax- we hope you’ll join her on the course!
You have all expressed interest in joining my team in the Bluenose Marathon and raising funds for the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. I am just reminding you to sign up online. The
CCAC would like to cover the registration costs of as many participants as possible who will commit to raising $250. If you are not interested in fundraising you are still welcome to join our team and participate in the run with team “Get Your Butt Seen Nova Scotia”. If $250 sounds daunting to you, don’t worry, in addition to soliciting friends and family for individual pledges we are planning group fundraising events as well, such as bake sales, car washes, potluck dinners, etc. Anybody who participates in a group event will have a share in the proceeds to put toward their individual fundraising goals.
To join our team go to www.bluenosemarathon.com and click on the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge, then click on the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Sign up as a new participant. The team name is “Get Your Butt Seen Nova Scotia” and the team captain is Gail Grief. You will also need to register for the actual bluenose marathon by filling out the pdf located on the marathon website. I will soon send along instructions on forwarding that to the CCAC for complimentary registration. Tell your friends an
d get them to sign up too! I am planning on running/walking the 10k, but you can do whatever portion of the marathon you would like.
Thanks for supporting me in my effort to raise money for a charity that is near and dear to my heart (and butt) and motivate me to participate in my first long-distance run!

The Health Benefits of Popcorn
What movie screening couldn’t be improved by the crunchy satisfaction of popcorn? Well if you’re trying to maintain a healthy weight to reduce your colon cancer risk, order cialis online in usa, you may wish to re-think your movie theatre snacks.
Don’t be tempted by the yellow glow of commercially prepared movie-theatre popcorn:
At Cineplex Entertainment — the largest chain in Canada with 1,328 screens — popcorn is now popped in non-hydrogenated canola oil, second best after air popped at home.
But the popcorn purchased by CSPI researchers weighed more than the company claims. After adjusting the serving size, a small popcorn with no topping had 480 calories.
A large untopped popcorn has 1,120 calories — half a day’s worth for most people, as well as 530 milligrams of sodium.
Health Canada recommends that adults consume less than 20 grams of saturated fat, and about 1,500 mg of sodium in an entire day based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
Patrons who opt for five pumps of Becel topping on a large, 20 cup portion at Cineplex add 270 calories and four grams of saturated fat. They get 320 calories and 22 grams of saturated fat with five squirts of Lactantia butter topping.

But we said we would talk about the health benefits, didn’t we?
Popcorn can be a pretty decent low-calorie, low-fat snack when popped with air instead of oil. It’s naturally high in fibre and it’s sodium-free. Too bad we load the butter and salt on after the fact! Here’s a quick recipe from wholeliving.com that uses less fat and sodium but doesn’t scrimp on the flavour:
- Pop 1/2 cup of kernels in your air-popping machine.
- Stir together 1 1/4 teaspoons chilli powder, 1 1/4 teaspoons cumin, 1 tablespoon of finely-grated lime zest and 1/2 teaspoon of coarse salt.
- While still hot, toss popcorn in spice mixture and sprinkle with lime juice. Voilà!
Don’t start any all-popcorn crash diets any time soon, though- popcorn should still be considered an occasional treat, and fresh fruits & veggies should still be your first-choice snacks.

The CCAC is proud to introduce Pat and Lauren Connors, children of the late, great Jim Connors. Their event promises to be a 6-pack of fun!
My Dad, Jim Connors—my idol, my hero—fought for two years against the injustice that was his own disease, Colon Cancer, and against the injustice of a healthcare system in Nova Scotia where certain life-extending drugs (in his case Avastin) were available only to those who could afford them.
Dad felt it patently unfair that his life would be extended because he could afford the drug, while others who could not afford it, would do without and die sooner. He advocated for that wrong to be righted.
Dad lost his personal battle before the other was won. He passed away in April 2008. A few months later the Nova Scotia government announced that it would fund Avastin.
Dad’s passing continues to leave a void—a void I know will never be entirely filled. However, those who knew and loved Dad are sustained by our memories of him and the legacy he left behind—a legacy of service to his community and devotion to those in need.
In the spirit of Dad’s legacy, my sister, Lauren, and I are committing to raise $20,000 to “Crunch out Colon Cancer.” Joined by family and friends, we will do a session of ‘8 Minute Abs’ for every $80.00 that we raise. (Don’t know what 8 Minute Abs is? Check it here, Gang!
Through this event we aim to raise money, awareness and spread a message that although Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Canada, it doesn’t have to be! If caught early—through screening it is preventable, treatable and beatable.

CCAC walkers, runners, volunteers and supporters will be at it again this year on Sunday, April 17th!
We are proud to be participating as the only national not-for-profit organization participating in the Scotia Charity Challenge events in all 5 cities across Canada.
Last year, our team made some noise as the CCAC CHEEKY BUTTS! Over 100 participants walked/ran and we raised more than $20,000 for colorectal cancer awareness and education activities, providing patient support resources and increasing advocacy efforts across the country.
This year, the CCAC’s “GET YOUR BUTT SEEN” team plans on making even more noise, and the team’s new identity coincides with our national awareness campaign and activities. Please help us spread the word by recruiting as many people as possible to join our team. It is loads of fun and you will be helping the CCAC to further draw attention to the prevention of colorectal cancer by promoting a physical activity anyone can take part of.
The CCAC will offer free registration to walkers/runners who raise a minimum of $250 from these events. The CCAC will also provide a free GET YOUR BUTT SEEN dry-fit t-shirt to be worn on race day, thanks to our generous national sponsors, Absolute Travel, Sixty Nine Jeans and Rothschild!

Are you ready to Graffiti Get Down?
The event is being planned and executed by 2nd year Special Events Planning Students at George Brown College in Toronto, and we hear it’s going to be a blast!
GGD is all about the four pillars of hip hop (emceeing, DJ’ing, breaking, graffiti) and showcasing those pillars. Our purpose is to raise money for the George Brown College first year Special Events Students, and this year an amazing 20% of the proceeds will support Sophie’s Run, an initiative benefiting the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.
Just four years ago, one of our professors at George Brown College, Nicole Chuchmach’s mother Sophie, passed away from colorectal cancer. During her mother’s illness and to help with the pain, Nicole started to run and she continued to run to help with the pain and grief of her mother’s passing. In 2008 Nicole started a charity, Sophie’s Run, to keep the legacy of her mother alive. Nicole and a team of runners, with the support of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada, ran from Milton ON to NewYork City raising $175, 000 dollars in honour of Sophie.
We also want to honour Sophie, and the courageand strength of both her and Nicole, by donating 20% of our funds raised from GGD.
Please join these incredible young crusaders for a fab night of live urban culture featuring a breakdancing competition and graffiti art raffles. You can also see what it feels like to be bad-to-the-bone and create your own grafitti masterpiece on site. You’ll be supporting George Brown College Special Events Scholarship fund and Sophie’s Run, two very worthy causes!

On March 23rd, members of the Kick Butt Run committee descended upon the Manitoba legislature to spread colorectal cancer awareness and distribute CCAC educational materials.
